SEO all begins here with your thought, your concept.
Define what you want to do by listing the keywords that apply to the product or service.

Once you have your list, do some research at WordTracker and order it in relation to most used.

When this is done, take two of the most popular and see if you can combine them for a domain name.

Register the domain for 5 years.

Your suggestion about using good keywords in your domain name is excellent. Most people don’t even think about this.

Another thing they should do is use WordTracker and SpyFu to find the niche that they want to compete in. I wouldn’t go for the center of the bell curve. I would make sure that my niche is more toward the tails.

Take some time to see how much competition there is in an area. It is important to do this up front. Don’t spend hundreds of hours only to find out that you chose the wrong niche.

Another thing is to think “Local Search”.
If you target your locality in your keywords, it helps develop your “authority” and results in better page rank.

All things being equal “Web Developers Fitch Bay Quebec” is going to place much better than the short-tail “Web Developers”.

People also like to shop locally. Putting yourself out to your community is never a bad idea.
